Equal opportunities must be guaranteed for every member of the political community, including Roma, Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Tibor Navracsis told the 5th European Roma Platform meeting in Budapest on Friday, MTI.hu reports.
Tibor Navracsis said that “more than 20 years ago we started building Hungary as a home for everyone and making the republic a republic for all citizens”.
He said however that Roma people had often been shunted off to the periphery of society, and for this reason greater attention should be paid to them. He also added that Hungary had only provided partial solutions to their problems in the past 20 years, and “many mistakes were made”
Laszlo Andor, the EU commisioner for Employment, Social Affair s and Inclusion, said that Roma integration is the responsibility of European Union member states, but the European Commision is ready to offer full support.
